From Idol to Music Artist

Who would have thought that a young cocktail waitress from Texas would eventually have three music labels? Kelly Clarkson won the first American Idol contest back in 2002, and was awarded with a record deal and the chance at a music career. That is when the Texas native released her first music album, Thankful in 2003. It is no surprise either, that that single music album was so well received. Not only did several of the music hits get number one on many hit-lists; but the album sol over two million copies, and the reviews to go along with it.

It took a long while for her to make it in to the music scene. Before winning “American Idol”, Clarkson joined her school’s chorus and began singing late in her youth, at age 13. Even back then, her voice was strikingly amazing, and everyone knew that she would one day have her own music labels. After graduating high school the lively young singer with a powerful voice recorded her own songs while holding down numerous jobs. Some of these songs she put onto websites for people to find the music files. But the downloading music sites were not popular enough for her to get noticed. She then moved west to make an attempt at a music career, but as fate would have it, it wasn’t her time yet. After a series of mishaps while living in Los Angeles, including an apartment fire that left her with nothing, she returned home to Texas.

The Evolution And Future Of Digital Sheet Music

Sheet music began as musical notations written on clay tablets by ancient Babylonians. It was used by the ancient Greeks, survived the Dark Ages, and became an important musical force during the Renaissance Period. With the advent of the printing press, printed sheet music affected the music industry in ways unimaginable by past generations. Yes, the history of sheet music is a long one, at least four thousand years, and it has been a story of evolution and growing dissemination. Yet if all those ancient musicians could see the form that sheet music has taken today, they would find it impossible to fathom. In modern times, sheet music has, like most other forms of communication, joined the digital age.

Beginning in the end of the 20th century, there was a great deal of interest in representing sheet music in a computer-readable format, as well as downloadable files. Software that can “read” scanned sheet music, called music optical character recognition (music OCR), has existed since 1991. Needless to say, this software created a completely new manner of dissemination for sheet music which, in this format, was referred to as virtual sheet music.

Further progress was made in 1998 when virtual sheet music became digital sheet music. The difference between the two is that digital sheet music, for the first time, allows copyrighted sheet music to be purchased via the internet. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, digital sheet music files can be manipulated and altered as their virtual and hardcopy counterparts never could. Such an attribute makes digital sheet music ideal for instrument changes, transposition, and even musical instrument digital interface, or “midi,” playback. Digital sheet music is the musical notation of the 21st century.

How to Play Jazz Guitar

There are many ways of starting to investigate how to play jazz guitar. Some guitar players see jazz as a way to learn improvisation. Others see jazz guitar as an instrument that accompanies a certain repertoire of songs. But once you start to actually study jazz you are confronted with a head-spinning array of odd looking chord shapes and endless discussion of modes and scales.

Just what is your average beginner guitar player supposed to think when all he wants to do is learn how to play jazz guitar? Well, jazz kind of grew like Topsy from its beginning as part of Black American culture in the early twentieth century. The rest of America and the rest of the world started adding their own interpretations of jazz music.

So now under the heading of jazz guitar we have widely diverse styles as those of Wes Montgomery, Lenny Breau, Joe Pass, Charlie Byrd, John McLaughlin, Herb Ellis, Pat Metheny and Charlie Christian. This list is just off the top of my head and these guys’ playing styles are as different from each other as cheese is from Shinola.

So where is the starting point for anybody who wants to learn how to play jazz guitar? I would have to say the repertoire. There is a body of songs and instrumental pieces that are called jazz standards. There is a website called Jazz Standards dot com that has twenty pages listing one thousand jazz standards.
